REGIONAL COMBINED EVENTS -FOUR ATHLETES QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS

While the number of athletes representing the County was quite low, their performances proved extremely rewarding as all four succeeded in qualifying for the ESAA National Championships in September.


Held on June 28 / 29 at Tilsley Park, Abingdon, he County was represented at the Regional Schools Combined Events (Midlands) by 3 athletes in the Senior Girls Heptathlon events and one in the Junior Girls Pentathlon.


SENIOR GIRLS

Thala-Jade Mason (Milton Keynes ) has already established a very strong record of success in both the Heptathlon and Long Jump while competing for Bedfordshire in previous years.

This year she moved schools to Milton Keynes entitling her to compete for Bucks and she continued to shine in her Heptathlon performance, this time making debut with the Senior implements.

She opened with a modest performance for her of 15.7 seconds i the 100m hurdles which places her in second. However, from the next event she moved into the lead and never looked back to record a strong 4434 pours for a clear win, the Regional title and Gold.



Behind her Florence Lee-Rubis (Wycombe High) was also making her Senior debut in this event. She opened strongly to establish a third place early in the meet. which, with 4 legal PBs, she held up until the 800m. Her finishing position of fourth


Aoife McAuley (Sir William Borlase) had a very consistent day opening in fifth position following the 100m hurdles and holding that position right to the very end with a PB points total of 3750 points.


Buckinghamshire has d a very strong winning margin over Nottinghamshire in the team event (12160 points to 10965) to ensure qualification for all of the team to the National Schools Combined Events in September.

JUNIOR GIRLS

Harriet Stichbury (Sir William Borlase) gained significant experience in the same age group and event last year competing in Mansfield.


This year, for most f the day, she hovered between fifth and sixth position. But in the final event, she outran on e of er key rivals in the 800m in a time of 2 mins 35 secs. This gave her a cushion of over 200 points on that athlete who had been in third place, now leaping Harriet inro a bronze medal winning slot.


While her score of 2406 was not quite as high as as her SEAA Champs PB, she was assured of an invite to the Nationals in September.
